CORONA – GOD’S WEAPON FOR TARGETTED DEMOLITION

THE PLAGUES OF EGYPT were specific and targeted, demolishing all the prominent gods of Egypt.

The Serpent god:  The Pharaoh’s gold crown was designed in the shape of a serpent – proving that Satan controlled the king. Moses’ serpent swallowed all the Pharaoh’s magicians’ serpents, thus proving the sovereignty of the God of Moses.

The River god (Nile) turning red: The Nile river was revered in Egypt like the Ganges is, in India today. A holy dip at the appropriate time could cleanse you from all sin. One whammy with Aaron’s rod, turned it into an unholy bloody river with stinking dead aquatic creatures.

The Sun god: was the all-powerful Egyptian god that famous Tutankhamun worshipped. Three days of total darkness demolished god Ra, making a mockery of his power, in a sun worshipping culture. (Genesis 1:14-19; Exodus 10:21-29)

The Ruler as god: Like most rulers, Pharaoh acted like god. He spoke arrogantly to Moses saying, “Who is this LORD that I should obey His voice and let Israel go?” But, with each encounter with Moses, his divinity and stature diminished. Finally, he realized that the God of Moses was Sovereign, who ruled over all mankind. He angrily told Moses and the Israelites to leave Egypt. (Exodus 5:1,2; 12:31,32)

The Rain and Ox gods:  that provided food and fodder for the people and cattle. Unprecedented rain and the giant-sized hail killed all their animals and destroyed their standing crops, proved that the God of Moses was mightier than their gods. At the same time, there was no collateral darkness or damage in Goshen where the Israelites lived on the banks of Nile.

Smaller gods:  All the other smaller gods like frogs, lies, flies, locusts etc. were minor gods that were also worshipped by Egyptians as they could do a lot of damage to themselves and to their crops. They were also destroyed.

Eldest son, Heir and Leader: Finally, the death of the eldest son who represented the future leadership of the family, whether king or common, totally demoralized and devasted the Egyptians. Egypt was the richest, most powerful and the most culturally advanced country in the world. It was at its peak during the stewardship of Joseph. They never recovered their lost glory till today.  The ignominious defeat by Israel in the two recently fought wars, took away what little respect was left.

The first nine plagues: were targeted only at Egyptians but the tenth one applied both to the Egyptians and the Israelites alike. Unless the Israelites applied the blood protection on their door frames, they would have also suffered the same fate. Being born in a Christian family and being a member of a church has advantages but by themselves they are not salvific. You are saved by grace of God through faith in the blood of the Lamb shed on the cross. (Eph. 2:8; Rev. 5:9,10; Rom. 10:9,10)

THE CORONA PERSPECTIVE: to a casual observer, Corona virus seems to attack irrespective of social status, caste, colour, gender or race. But is it so? Let us look at our modern-day gods. They are not necessarily located in religious temples. God is shooting lethal missiles at them with clinical precision.

Mammon (Money) god: seems to top the list of gods that Scripture says, “the pagans strive after” and nearly everyone worships, Further the Scripture says, “You cannot serve both God and Mammon (money) because the love of money is the root of all evil. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (Matt. 6:21,24;32; 1 Tim. 6:10-12). No wonder the first thing Corona did was to shut all income generating businesses and turned banks into bankruptcy. The coming economic devastation will be worse than the virus devastation. Do not say, “The power and the strength of my hand has made this wealth for me”. But remember that it is the LORD your God who gives you the power to gain wealth, in order to confirm His covenant that He swore to your fathers, (Abraham - to be a blessing to all the families of the earth (Deut 8:17,18; Gen. 12:3).”  It is not your ability to earn money that takes care of you. Instead there is a Sovereign God above, who feeds countless fowls of the air, fish of the sea, land animals and creeping things, in fact all living things, including you. (Matt. 6:26; 32,33)

Religion as god:  There is a whole industry based on this most powerful god. Whether it is the richest Hindu temple in Tirupati in South India or the most holy Muslim mosques in Mecca or Medina or the Vatican, the epicenter of Catholicism and all the other 40,000 denominational churches, all have been locked down. Many have turned to digital worship, preaching to empty benches but not forgetting to provide their bank account numbers. Even so, 63% of Pastors in the USA, have reported that giving is down. God does not want his church to be tithes, offerings and dollar dependent. Such churches will diminish but faith-based simple churches meeting in homes, will survive and thrive. This happened in China 70 years ago. Today they have 100 million believers. It’s time for priests and reverends to know that they are not the only ordained ones, but that every believer is an ordained royal priest. The church does not need revival, it needs complete overhaul and restructuring. (John 15:16; 1Peter 2:9)

Sports god: This is also a global god worshipped by rich and poor alike. From the Olympics to the slum kids’ cricket and football clubs, all stadiums packed with worshipful company of spectators are now empty. Their heroes who commanded multi-million dollars are sitting at home, staring at empty gyms.

Entertainment gods and goddesses: Hollywood to Bollywood actors and actresses who called themselves stars and celebrities and acted like demi-gods, are gazing at empty cinema halls, realizing that life is not a non-stop party. With few exceptions, most have not extended any help to the suffering people from whom they earned all their wealth and adoration.

Travel, Tourism and Hospitality god: With planes, trains, buses and other modes of transport shut down in many places, tourism and hospitality, multi-million business has also downed shutters. Also, in the beaches and bars, once the centers of partying and gregarious life, one can still hear the roaring sea and the clash of empty glasses but no worshippers. The sufferers are the poor migrant laborers who must walk hundreds of miles to reach their homes, men carrying their children on their shoulders and women carrying luggage on their heads. Some of them are differently abled. As if this was not bad enough, they also get thrashed by the police for walking home during the lockdown. 

Food god:  Earlier on, in India people used to eat at home and go outside to toilet. Of late, they have been eating out and toileting inside the house. With all the food outlets and Malls shut, many carnivores (non-vegetarians) who could not manage a meal without meat, are now like Adam and Eve, returning to a healthy plant-based diet. The problem is that with the markets closed, neither meat nor vegetables are easily available. People like the daily wagers and the migrant workers, do not have money to buy food. Even in this tragedy, the rich are getting richer, while millions of tons of grains are rotting in government stores. More people will die of starvation than of the Corona virus. 

Education god: of all kinds, academic, professional and religious, is a big business. You are given the impression that you cannot get anywhere in life without it. However, 2000 years ago, Jesus proved that without formal education, he could turn his simple disciples into world changers. (Acts 17:6)

Technology god: Technology is a god that rules, every aspect of our life, business and even religion. For many, a mobile phone is not just a tool but an inseparable body part. God’s designed this tool to, “Saturate the earth with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord as the waters cover the sea.” This can easily take place if Christians, instead of saturating other Christians with the gospel message, use this powerful tool to engage those who sit in darkness and in the shadows of death (Matt. 4:16). We need to evaluate how much use we are making of this resource for glorifying God and advancing his Kingdom, here on planet earth. Whether you realize it or not, of late, much of technology has been stolen by Anti-Christ to establish his one world government and a universal religion and thus control people. However, God cannot be mocked (Hab. 2:14)

So, is this the end of the of world as we know it? No, not really. Not yet. These are just the beginning of the sorrows, the early birth pangs; the baby is yet to be born (Matthew 24:8). When that happens, in one hour, the city that made them rich will be destroyed along with an asteroid that will demolish one third of the earth. Not only that, but on the day of the Lord, the sun will become seven times hotter and the heavens will be set on fire and dissolved, and the heavenly bodies will melt! And then new heavens and a new earth will emerge in which righteousness dwells. All those who have rejected Jesus will mourn but the righteous will dwell with him forever. (Rev. 18:17-19; 8:8-12; Matt. 24:30).
